Prempro is a hormone replacement treatment marketed by the Wyeth pharmaceutical company. The drug was designed to treat menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. There was an initial belief that Hormone Replacement Therapy could also reduce a woman’s risk of osteoporosis and heart complications. On July 9th,2002 The National Institute of Health stopped a major clinical study involving Prempro because preliminary data showed that long-term use of estrogen and progestin significantly increased a woman’s risk of developing invasive breast cancer, blood clots, and heart attacks. The NIH findings show that use of hormone replacement therapy after only one year increased an otherwise healthy woman's risk of a heart attack by 29 %, breast cancer by 24%, stroke by 41 % and blood clots by 200%.
