Roundup, a commonly-used household weed killer, has recently made headlines for its alleged cancer risks. Although Roundup markets itself as safe and effective for consumer use, thousands of victims are coming forward with allegations that exposure to Roundup caused them to develop cancer. Our Nashville product liability lawyers are currently exploring Tennessee Roundup lawsuits.
California Jury Awards $289m
In August 2018, a California jury awarded $289 million to one such victim, Dewayne Johnson, who used Roundup regularly for two years in his job as a groundskeeper. Johnson subsequently developed a fatal case of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that affects the immune system. The California court found that frequent exposure to glyphosate, a chemical in Roundup, was the probable cause of Johnson’s terminal cancer. Glyphosate has been noted as a “probable carcinogen” (a cancer-causing chemical) by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.
The verdict in the Johnson case led thousands of other litigants to connect their use of Roundup to subsequent cancer diagnoses. As of February 2018, over 11,200 people had filed claims against Roundup’s parent company, Bayer/Monsanto, stating that their exposure to glyphosate in Roundup caused them to develop cancer. Bayer continues to deny that glyphosate has cancer-causing properties, and does not place warning labels on Roundup to warn consumers of the product’s potential cancer risks.
